Preschool ages 2-4 *This Class is only available for families with older children attending the Co-op.*

This is offered to parents that are teaching, primarily, and families who have other children in the older grades. The focus is basically playtime. There may be story times, games, and snacks.

Grades K-2 Science - Physical Science

Through hands-on experiments and activities focusing on motion, matter, and energy, we'll explore the physical forces and properties that shape our universe. We will cover topics such as: Matter - Solids, Liquids, and Gases, Motion - Forces (Pushes/Pulls, Friction, Gravity), Momentum, Simple Machines, Thermodynamics - Heat, Work, Waves - Light, Sound, Electricity, Magnetism, Chemical Reactions.

Grades K-2 Geography- Around the World

Around the world- K-2nd grade will be learning about different countries- the locations, characteristics, traditions and songs. Through stories, games and activities it will be a fun way to focus on geography and cultures.

Grades 3-5th/6th- Science - The Good & Beautiful Health and the Physical Body

We will explore the human body's unique structure and function. It covers topics like cell function, body systems, nutrition, and hygiene, with lessons focused on the amazing way God created our bodies. The course encourages hands-on activities, uses engaging visuals, and includes a course book with lesson guides, vocabulary, and access to videos.

Required Text: Students will need to purchase The Good & Beautiful Health and the Physical Body Course Book and Student Journal 3-6.

The time together will be spent doing fun hands-on activities.

Grades 3-5th/6th- Art - Arts & Crafts

Join us for a fun year exploring the different ways of creating art! We will be learning how to create abstract art, 3D Art, gradients/shading, and realistic art.

Grades 6th-8th - Science - General  Science

Carl Sagan is quoted as saying "Science is a way of thinking much more than a body of knowledge". With that in mind, we will be using Bernard Nebel's Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding as the basis for class discussion, exploration and inquiry. Dr. Nebel's unique curriculum aims "to guide students to a level of scientific knowledge, understanding and thinking ability such that they can comprehend the basic parameters of scientific issues". Topics will include the nature of matter, life science, physical science and earth science. Along the way, students will be encouraged to independently make connections across scientific and technological disciplines and to develop a working understanding of all major areas of science.

No text book is required at this time. Please note that throughout the year some books may be suggested for supplemental reading, but I anticipate most of these will be available at your library.

Students should purchase a scientific/lab notebook prior to the start of class. I would suggest a basic graph ruled composition notebook.

Grades 6th-8th - Art History

This class will be a mix of art history and creating art projects, introducing students to some of the major art movements. Each class will be based on a piece of artwork from the Currier Museum of Art, and we will culminate with a field trip to visit the art we have learned about.

We will start each class with a brief lecture, then transition to creating our own artwork in the style of whatever we are learning about that week. The final class will be spend making a portfolio so that each student takes a collection of artwork with them from the experience.

Grades 9th-12th Science - Apologia Chemistry

Required Text: Apologia Chemistry text and notebook (3rd Edition)

This chemistry course provides an in-depth introduction to the methods and concepts of general chemistry, as well as a ton of chemistry lab experiments that will help take your student's learning even further! Students will be required to complete the course work at home and come to class prepared to work through the lab experiments. All lab equipment and chemicals will be provided.

Grades 9th-12th - High School Microeconomics

Required Text: The Cartoon Introduction to Economics: Volume 1 Microeconomics by Grady Klein and Yoram Bauman

We will learn the foundations of economics using a humorous curriculum full of comic books and games. To me, economics is anything but boring and hopefully the class will reflect that! Basic subjects covered include:

1) Optimizing individuals (decision trees, risk, etc.)
2) Strategic Interactions (distribution, efficiency, auctions)
3) Market Interactions ( Supply and Demand, taxes, elasticity)
I'm also hoping to do the stock market game with them.

The WHE Co-op only runs 14 times per year.  We come together for labs and classes that enhance your homeschool experience. Our schedule means less time commitment, yet it still allows for structured classes with a group of peers.  We also have set up our day to allow for plenty of social time for parents and children.  Our classes are run by homeschool parents which keeps our costs down.  We require parents to volunteer in some capacity so everyone feels connected as part of the team.  We hope you will consider our group for your family!

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Cooperative is defined as involving mutual assistance in working toward a common goal: every member has clearly defined tasks in a cooperative enterprise.

WHE requires parents in our co-op to fill a Volunteer Assignments. These positions could include, but are not limited to: classroom helper, nursery, hall monitor, or set up/clean up. Parents will be required to serve in some capacity. Parents should be flexible to work in various roles within the group to assure our day runs efficiently.
